Pure, high-quality (unrefined) & organic olive oil is the main ingredient in MYTHYN soap because it is naturally very nourishing for your skin, antioxidant rich, full of vitamin A and E and hypoallergenic.
Coconut oil is easily one of my favourite ingredients and for good reason: it creates the most beautiful lather, it hardens the soap, it moisturises the skin and has a long shelf life. It helps as well that it smells divine raw.
By the way, I only use the highest, most beautiful coconut oil available. On its own, this oil is incredibly valuable and a start ingredient in MYTHYN products.
Rapeseed oil has anti-inflammatory properties. It is rich in antioxidants and omega 3, adding further moisturising properties to MYTHYN soaps.
Hempseed oil contributes to the soap lather, and moisturises the skin. Best of all, it has anti-inflammatory properties – perfect for those with sensitive skin like me.
Avocado butter provides excellent moisturising properties to MYTHYN soap. This creamy butter also helps make the bars harder, which makes them last longer.
Sunflower oil is full of vitamin E and helps produce a beautifully rich and creamy lather in MYTHYN soaps.
This beautiful, all-round wonder butter is one of my favourites. It is non-comedogenic (it doesn’t clog your pores), has an SPF of 6, and makes for a great butter to use raw. At MYTHYN, you will find it in our soaps, giving them a luxurious, skin-nourishing quality.
Evening primrose oil, with its high linoleic and gamma-linolenic acids (vitamin F), is known to treat dry, red or irritated skin.
Castor oil helps MYTHYN soaps lather and acts as a humectant, drawing moisture to your skin.
Beeswax hardens soaps to make them longer-lasting.
No real soap bar is ever made without lye. Any product that claims to clean without it is actually detergent based which I would not use on my skin. Also known as caustic soda, sodium hydroxide is first mixed with -traditionally, but it is fun to experiment with other liquids too- distilled water. This first mix is called lye. The lye then reacts with the fatty acids in oils and butters once mixed together, saponifying these ingredients through a chemical reaction and creating soap. Soap, contains saponified oils (no trace of lye left), glycerin to moisturise and water which is evaporated during the curing period. Once the soap has cured, it is tested and ready for use. MYTHYN soaps are superfatted (they contain more oils & butters than are needed for saponification) to add extra moisturising properties.
MYTHYN candles are made exclusively with Rapeseed Wax. That is because it is produced in Europe completely sustainably with no issues of intensive farming, deforestation or GMO presence unlike other natural alternatives such as Soy wax. The crops already serve to produce rapeseed oil and to feed animals, and have been traditionally used to protect the soil where they are cultivated. It is non-hazardous to both humans & wildlife and does not create toxins when burned. Because it is produced closest to us than any of the other alternatives it also has the lowest carbon footprint.
Essential oils are plant based extracts which are used in bath & cosmetic products, candles and other scented all-natural products. They add scent and known therapeutic benefits (aromatherapy).
Fragrances are cheaper to produce and more commonly used in this industry. They offer synthetic pre-made blends and scents that cannot be extracted naturally which makes them appealing, however, these offer no aroma therapeutic benefits and contain numerous toxins (benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, propylene glycol, parabens, and sulfates to name a few). It is scary to realise that 95% of these toxins are derived from petroleum byproducts, and are known to be harmful to health (to your skin, and through breathing as well).
Essential oils, on the other hand, are difficult to produce, and require a large quantity of raw product to produce small quantities of scented oils, however they are entirely natural, and leave no harmful toxins on your skin or in the air. Some people experience allergic reactions to some (not all) essential oils, but MYTHYN products are formulated to use skin-safe essential oils in the recommended dosage, for each product usage. MYTHYN products are also all, without exception, cosmetically independently tested and certified prior to being sold. Soaps and bath products are all rinsed off, and our candles burn cleanly.
Originating from the Himalayas, this is the purest salt there is making this a very valuable ingredient to detox, remineralize and purify the skin.
Pure grey-green salt sourced from the French Guerrande. This salt is farmed in salt marshes rich in green mineral clay and algae, it contains no impurities, and no additives, only the nutrient rich natural local salt farmed organically in the traditional method.
Epsom salt is a natural wonder ingredient for bath products. It helps your body to relieve pain and muscle cramps, relaxing you and detoxing your skin. It also exfoliates and softens the skin and is, therefore, a staple in MYTHYN bath formulations.
Silk adds an incredibly luxurious feeling to bath, skin and cosmetics products, and in MYTHYN formulations, acts as a humectant meaning that it helps cosmetic products retain as well as supply moisture. While this ingredient means that our products are not vegan, MYTHYN sources cruelty-free silk only: the silk is extracted without killing the silkworm because the cocoon is collected after the moths naturally emerge.
A natural source of scent & colour. I sometimes use them to complement the scent, adding sharpness or sweetness, as well as to balance the texture of some of the dry bath products.
The magic ingredient in Melusine. This ingredient is incredibly rich in protein and nutrients which do wonder nourishing your skin and detoxifying it. Spirulina also gives Melusine’s vibrant green colour and earthy base scent which contrasts perfectly with the citrusy essential oils.
Sodium lactate is a naturally derived liquid salt: sugars found in corn and beets, for example, are fermented then the resulting lactic acid is neutralised to create this mild saline solution. In soaps, sodium lactate is a humectant which means that it further adds moisturising properties to MYTHYN formulations. Everything in my formulations is designed to nurture.
