Beautiful and high-quality ingredients are a huge part of achieving our mission to create unapologetically luxurious, ethical & natural products. If you’ve read our recent post on how we develop our products, you’ll know that for us, every product must serve a purpose & answer a need. We believe in creating what we call botanical alchemy. Every ingredient that makes up the product works together, building synergy and adding truly beneficial properties that together make up the product’s function.
One of my absolute favourite ingredients to use for our PURE gentle natural soap bars is hemp seed oil and today I’m excited to introduce you to this wonderful natural oil.
Deep nourishment for your skin
The hemp seed oil we use is organic and cold-pressed so that it retains as much of its nutrients and potency as possible.
A deeply nourishing and moisturising oil, hemp seed is rich in antioxidants, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and encourages skin growth and new cell generation making it a wonderfully potent oil to calm inflammation and irritation on the skin. It makes for a powerful moisturizer and skin softener widely used to soothe skin suffering from eczema for example.
With a comedogenic rating of zero (learn more about comedogenic ratings here) hemp seed oil neither clogs pores nor contributes to oily skin. This is incredibly important because it means that even the most susceptible skin to overproducing sebum will not be triggered by hemp seed oil.
Hemp seed oil in our soap bars
In our soap bars, hemp seed oil is added last with our other conditioning oils (castor & jojoba) so it undergoes the least amount of processing as we make our soaps using the cold process method. This means the oil is not heated, it is mixed directly with the other oils, butters and the lye (essential to making soap), so that the oils saponify and the mix becomes soap – there is no lye left in the end result. We add more oils than are necessary for the saponification process so that the resulting soap is extra-nourishing. This is where the quality of the oils we use shines even more, here to nourish the skin while cleansing it.
A nourishing soap will have more oils & butters added to it than is necessary for the saponification process, so that the extra oils can help condition the skin while using the soap. This is why we use the highest quality, organic and cold-process oils for our natural soap bars. A deeply nourishing and conditioning oil such as hemp seed oil is added to deliver its amazing properties at every wash.
Does hemp seed oil contain CBD?
No it does not. Hemp seed oil is different from CBD oil. Both CBD & hemp seed oil are very sought-after ingredients in luxury skincare products, however, they are different and used for entirely different purposes.
Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seed rather than the plant and does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the psychoactive in cannabis. It is used as a moisturiser and softener that can soothe the symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions (not help to heal them), and help with skin dryness. We use it in our soaps because the purpose here is to maintain the condition of your skin and to protect the skin barrier.
CBD oil, also known as cannabidiol, is a component of the cannabis plant, extracted from the leaves, flowers, and stalks of the cannabis plant and contains THC in small percentages. Its use is controversial for a number of reasons and so far there is not a lot of research to back claims that it can heal skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Benefits are similar to those of hemp seed oil & in time, with further research, more information will become available on efficacy.
Purpose in skincare – will hemp seed oil heal my skin condition?
When buying products using either hemp seed oil or CBD, you want to look at the purpose of the product – are you looking to condition the skin or to heal it (is your need medicinal or is it skincare you are looking for)?
Skincare is not medicinal – it aims to care for your skin and beautify. As soon as a product makes medicinal claims, it must comply with medicine-class regulations instead which are completely different.
At MYTHYN we are firm believers in being transparent about our process and ingredients, but sadly, this is not the norm. The lack of transparency and need to differentiate your products in a busy market mean that many businesses fly very close to the sun with their claims and wordings (this is called green washing). As customers, we often have to look past the pretty slogans and claims to find out the true composition of the products we purchase.
Hemp seed oil is used in skincare & in our soaps to condition your skin, making it feel nourished and soft after using the product. It’s a wonderful ingredient that, in its own right, is highly valuable and which I highly recommend you look for in your skincare routine if you tend to have skin reactions or dry skin.
I hope this was a helpful guide & as always if you have any questions or want to share your story I’ll see you in the comments!
Until next time,
